Wotan condemns his daughter Brunnhilde to sleep on the Valkyries rock until a man finds her and wakes her. To ensure only the noblest of heroes finds her, he summons Loge to surround her rock with a circle of fire, and proclaims that whoever fears his spearpoint shall never pass through the flames.
