His Symphony No. 3 came as a musical response to Boulez’s Pli selon Pli, but it was also to carry deeper introspection: in the second movement, Tippett quotes the opening of the final movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and contradicts the romantic credo of Schiller with the 20th Century military horror experiences. Yet it gives a Blakeian solution to reach understanding and hope: coping with the devilish and divine duality that exists within us. Su Sinfonía No. 3 vino como una respuesta musical a Pli selon Pli de Boulez, pero tendría también un mensaje musical de gran introspección: en el segundo movimiento cita la apertura del movimiento final de la Novena de Beethoven, al mismo tiempo que contradice el credo romántico de Schiller con los horrores militares del siglo 20.
