Jose Luis was inspired by the poem of Bertold Brecht - 'Legend of the Dead Soldier'.
It was cited by the Nazis as one of their strongest reasons to deprive Brecht of German citizeship in 1935. Like several other poems, it was set to music by the author and sung in a Berlin cabaret:
"And when the war was four Spring old /
And of peace there was not a breath /
The soldier took the logical step /
And died a hero's death."
The soldier is then dug up, pronounced fit for active duty, and sent to the front, surrounded by a cheering crowd...
