Albéniz composed "Rapsodia española" in 1886-87 for two pianos, but it was left to his friend Tomás Bretón to create a version for piano and orchestra. Later, George Enescu in 1911 and Cristóbal Halffter in 1959 have made their own arrangements. Halffters arrangement has become the preferred version among performers, in time.
Rapsodia española consists of four themes associated with four Spanish genres; petenera, jota, malagueña and estudiantina.
