This is the first part of John Adams' epic symphony-like work entitled Naive and Sentimental Music. Written in 1998, the title of the work stems from an essay by Friederich Schiller, "On Naive and Sentimental Poetry", which attempts to distinguish between two aspects of art. On the one hand, there is the artist who produces creatively for the sake of art and creativity itself (the "naive"). The "sentimental" artist, however, tends to frame his/her art within a context or sorts, historical or otherwise. Adams cites Bruckner's 4th symphony and the Sonoma coastline of Northern California as inspiration for the piece.
