Description on Youtube:
Recording / Video Production: Christos Iliadis "Home Studio" Guitar: Matthias Dammann (2012) Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996): "In the woods - three pieces for guitar" (1995) I. Wainscot Pond (00:15) II. Rosedale (03:29) III. Muir woods (07:15) "In the woods" was composed in November 1995, few months before Takemitsu's death. He was fighting cancer at the time and knew he would die soon. After "In the woods" Takemitsu completed only one more piece ("Air" for solo flute) before he passed away on February 20th 1996. I. "Wainscot Pond - after a painting by Cornelia Foss" is dedicated to John Williams. A Pond is a small area of still water - this is why we decided to film the first part of the video next to a pond in the forest. Wainscot Pond is located on Rode Island, New York. Cornelia Foss painted a series of Wainscot Pond. Some of her paintings (including "Wainscot Pond") can be seen on www.dfngallery.com. II. "Rosedale" is dedicated to Kiyoshi Shomura. Rosedale is a wealthy, old suburb of Toronto, Canada. Characteristic of this high priced part of town are rose gardens and 19th and 20th century houses and mansions. Takemitsu had a special relationship to Toronto since many of his pieces were premiered there. III. "Muir Woods" is dedicated to Julian Bream. Muir woods is a National Momument of old Coast Redwood forest, north of San Fransisco, California. Takemitsu visited Muir Woods on his last trip to the USA and was inspired by the giant Redwood trees.
