Morton Gould: Symphony No. 2
Vladimir Golschmann, New York Philharmonic (world premiere performance of June 4, 1944)
Writes composer/writer David Canfield, "American composer Morton Gould (1915-1996) is famous for his ubiquitous American Salute and a few other lighter works, but he wrote a great deal of "serious" music, including the symphony presented here. Gould's idiom is distinctively American. The 2nd symphony was written for the centenary for the founding of the YMCA, and draws freely from American marches, especially from the Civil War era."
