Mary is joined by the Academy of Ancient Music, directed by Christopher Bucknall at the harpsichord. With elements first used in the 1705 opera Almira, this frequently-reworked melody was a favourite of Handel's; he adapted it again in 1711 for his London opera Rinaldo as 'Lascia ch'io pianga' ('Let me weep'), and the opera's success led to the latter version being the one most commonly performed today.
