Beethoven: Violin Romance No. 1 | Carolin Widmann, Kammerorchester Basel & Sylvain Cambreling
Description on Youtube:
It is a gem among Beethoven’s works: ”Romance for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 in G major, Op. 40“, performed here by Carolin Widmann and the Basel Chamber Orchestra (Kammerorchester Basel) with Sylvain Cambreling. The concert was held at the 2021 Beethovenfest in the World Conference Center Bonn (WCCB). The Romance for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 in G major, Op. 40 isn’t even seven minutes long, and yet it is a masterpiece. Composed around 1800/1801, the piece brings together violin virtuosity, heartfelt emotional expression and Ludwig van Beethoven's (1770 – 1827) typical ingenuity. One defining feature of this violin romance is the theme initially played by the violin in double stops that is echoed by the orchestra before it continues to dot the entire work in multiple variations. The theme‘s melodious nature is a nod towards the romance originally being a genre for songs that consisted of verses and told heart-wrenching tales. Although there is no known program that Beethoven’s Romance for Violin No. 1 could have scored, it’s not hard to imagine that the violin in this piece tells a true story – one based on touching and pleasant memories.
