Engine (1996)
London Sinfonietta
Oliver Knussen
Engine is based on a sophisticated use of personally designed computer software, but as the actual score is realized entirely by live musicians, with no added electronics, the listener is unaware of this fact. The idea governing Engine is that the composer has defined certain rules or constraints for the computer, which then generates raw material for the composition. Lindberg fixed the rules so that the resulting textures would be close to the brutal sonorities of earlier works like Kraft or UR.
