Respighi’s Suite in E major was the composer’s first attempt to write a symphony. Conceived between 1901 and 1907, the work is redolent of his five-month studies with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in St. Petersburg, because its language is similar to that of Tchaikovsky, Dvorak and Korsakov himself. Nonetheless, he uses a large, late romantic orchestra, and distinctively Italian flavors from Respighi’s early operas.
