Adagio II. Allegro Molto Liliya Ugay, piano Лилия Угай, фортепиано Mieczysław Weinberg (1919-1996) was Poland-born, Soviet composer of Jewish origins, one of the most underestimated composers in 20th century, and particularly among composers of USSR. Most of Weinberg's family died in Holocaust in concentration camps; he and his music were persecuted by the Soviet goverment. In 1953 Weinberg was arrested for "Jewish bourgeois nationalism", he survived due to Stalin's death. He was a close friend of Shostakovich who highly admired Weinberg's works. In this particular sonata Weinberg used the theme of Shostakovich's d-minor fugue (from preludes and fugues for piano).
