Perspectives Ensemble performs Libra (1968) by the great Catalan composer Roberto Gerhard live. Performers: Angel Gil-Ordóñez, conductor; Cyrus Beroukhim, violin; Sato Moughalian, flute; Pascal Archer, clarinet; Blair McMillen, piano; Oren Fader, guitar; Barry Centanni and Jeffrey Irving, percussion.
The Catalan composer Roberto Gerhard (1896-1970) was the only Spanish student of Arnold Schoenberg, and was also instrumental in introducing works of the Second Viennese School into the flourishing arts scene in Barcelona in the 1920s and 30s. Exiled during the Spanish Civil War, he spent most of the following decades in England, continuing to study and present folk music of Spain as well as music of the Spanish Renaissance and later periods. Libra combines both the serial techniques he favored with a strong element of flamenco in a modern sound world.
