The amazing Royal Northern Sinfonia playing my piece "Badder Gyrations" live at the Sage Gateshead on 18th Jan 2019, conducted by Jessica Cottis.
Program Note:
Badder Gyrations is a riotous celebration of underground and urban dance rhythms, as seen though the eyes (or perhaps heard through the ears) of a composer brought up in a rather different tradition. Mutant funk rubs up alongside distorted dubstep and drum 'n' bass, stretching and morphing into new, uncomfortable forms.
This short work falls into three sections, a firmly grinding opening, which almost feels like a heavy 2-step, a seriously syncopated jazz-funk-influenced central section, featuring interwoven woodwind solos, and a final, massively unsubtle, stomping rhythmic coda.
