Cipriano de Rore / Mia Benigna Fortuna
Il secondo libro de madrigali a 4 (1557)
Mia benigna fortuna e'l viver lieto,
I chiari giorni e le tranquille notti,
E i soavi sospiri , e'l dolce stile
Che solea risonare in versi e’n rime,
Volti subitamente in doglia e’n pianto,
Odiar vita mi fanno et bramar morte.
Crudel, acerba inexorabil Morte,
Cagion mi dài di mai non esser lieto,
Ma di menar tutta mia vita in pianto.
E i giorni oscuri et le dogliose notti,
I miei gravi sospir’ non vanno in rime,
E'l mio duro martir vince ogni stile.
Francesco Petrarca (1304–1374)
-------------------------------------------------------
My benign fortune and life content,
The clear days and the tranquil nights,
The smooth sighs, and the sweet style
Which all resonate in verses and rhymes,
Change suddenly into pain and tears,
Causing me to hate life and long for death.
Cruel bitter inescapable death,
My reason for never being content,
But rather for spending all my life in tears.
The obscure days and the painful nights,
My grave sighs will not fit into rhymes;
And my harsh torture defeats every style.
