But during the day he worked at his own insurance company, one of the most successful in the country. This piece started as 3 separate organ works based on church hymns before it was assembled into this symphony. Ives loved story-telling through his music. This work follows the progress of an old-time gospel meeting. It won the Pulitzer Prize 37 years after it was composed, an honor that Ives didn’t care about at all.
