Il re pastore (The Shepherd King) is an opera seria,Drammn per musica or Serenata written by Mozart to an Italian Libretto by Pietro Metastasio, edited by Varesco. In 1775 the opera was commissioned for a visit by the archduke Maximillian Franz, the youngest son of Empress Maria Theresa, to Salzburg. Mozart spent six weeks working on the opera which was first performed on April 23, 1775 at the palace of the Archbishop in Salzburg.
