Pedro Vargas (April 29, 1904 October 30, 1989) was a famous Mexican singer of the 20th-century. His "official" nickname was "The Samurai of the song".[citation needed]
A native of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Vargas was a classically-trained tenor. He originally sang opera, but gained fame performing renditions of popular songs. Throughout the late 1930s, he made a number of musical and acting appearances. In total, he achieved over 70 screen credits.
In 1942, Vargas performed at the White House for President Roosevelt. He also performed in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela. Vargas was well known in Mexico, and often ended performances saying, "very grateful, very grateful, very grateful".[citation needed]
Unlike other singer-actors of the time, Vargras was not known as a "heartthtrob" or galane, like Jorge Negrete or Pedro Infante.
