In the decades following the Mexican Revolution (1910-20), artists sought to develop new national styles by drawing on Mexico’s pre-Columbian heritage. No music exemplified this movement more than the nationalistic compositions of Carlos Chávez, then Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de México and the country’s leading musical exponent abroad. Commissioned by CBS, Chávez’s Symphony No. 2, “Sinfonía india,” is one of modern Mexico’s musical monuments, incorporating several authentic indigenous melodies and instruments the composer encountered as a child.
