The Nocturne op 19 N°4 was originally one of six pieces for piano which Tchaikovsky orchestrated in 1888, together with the Andante cantabile also on this recording. The piece starts with a haunting cello melody followed by a contrasting mid-section in a major key, and a short cadenza leads to the return of the first melody, this time with a beautiful counter melody on the flute.
