Xenakis used computerised randomisation (‘stochastics’) in generating the complex rhythms and tone clusters of his 1980 piece ‘Mists’. Clouds of notes, sometimes as thick and acrid as smog, sometimes transparent and ethereal, are interspersed with silences in this strangely evocative music.
