Hudson River Suite (1955)
I. The River
II. Henry Hudson
III. Rip Van Winkle
An orchestral suite by the American composer and arranger Ferde Grofé (1892-1972), best known for his collaboration with the Paul Whiteman orchestra in the 1920's. The Hudson River Suite consists of a series of tableaux depicting the river, its environs, its history and folklore, and its passage through New York City. Grofé had been working on a tone poem called Rip Van Winkle, after the story by Washington Irving, but rather than finishing it as a stand-alone work, he included it as the third movement of this suite.
